Discover more about what makes Siamangs so unique.
Siamangs are highly monogamous, forming strong bonds between pairs and mating for life. Both parents play an important role in caring for young, with up to three offspring living in the family group at a time.
Each pair of siamang will start their morning by singing duets together that echo throughout the jungle. These melodic calls are unique to each pair and is an important signifier to neighbouring family groups about territory boundaries.
Large bodies, broad chests, and the absence of a tail are all signs that Siamangs are apes not monkeys. Apes have larger brains relative to body sizes than monkeys, allowing for greater problem-solving abilities and tool use.
As Siamangs move through their territory, they leave behind poo loaded with seeds from the plants in their diet. By eating fruit in one location and defecating in another, Siamangs can help spread seeds hundreds of metres and spark the growth of new plants.
You can recycle your phone at both of Taronga’s Zoos! But wait, what do mobile phones have to do with Gorillas, Siamang and other great apes? Find out with They’re Calling On You.
